Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj, the revered saint in the Digambar Jain community, passed away at the age of 78 on February 17, 2024. Born on October 10, 1946, in Sadalga, Karnataka, he embarked on his spiritual journey from an early age, ultimately becoming one of the most distinguished figures in Jainism.
Initiated as a Digambara monk by Acharya Gyansagar Ji Maharaj at 22 in 1968, Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj’s spiritual prowess and scholarly dedication were evident early on. In 1972, he attained the prestigious Acharya status, marking a significant milestone in his lifelong commitment to Jain philosophy and spirituality.
Throughout his illustrious life, Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj immersed himself in the profound study of Jain scriptures, philosophy, and languages. His command over Sanskrit, Prakrit, and other languages facilitated his insightful commentaries, poems, and spiritual treatises, earning him widespread recognition within the Jain community.
Among his notable works are the Niranjana Shataka, Bhavana Shataka, Parishah Jaya Shataka, Suniti Shataka, and Shramana Shataka, each reflecting his deep understanding and spiritual wisdom.
Beyond his scholarly pursuits, Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj was also a fervent advocate for Hindi promotion and the use of the official language in the justice delivery system across states, demonstrating his commitment to linguistic and societal reforms.
